Travel Tips

WEATHER
It’s changeable!  The average high in summer is 61F although it can get as warm as the mid 80s on a hot day.  The best thing to do is be prepared and dress in layers.  And, yes, it rains a lot, especially in the southwest region.  The upside of that is that it’s incredibly green and lush throughout the country and rainbows abound.  During the summer months you can expect 18 hours of daylight….it doesn’t get truly dark until after 11 p.m.

CURRENCY
Ireland is a member of the European Union and uses the Euro (€).  Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and uses the British Pound (£).  They are NOT the same and are not interchangeable.  The best exchange rates are generally to be found at banks, open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

ATMs AND CREDIT CARDS
Most banks have ATMs which are linked to international money systems such as Cirrus, Maestro or Plus.  VISA and MASTERCARD are widely accepted, with AMERICAN EXPRESS and DINERS CLUB  being a little less so.  Some establishments require that the credit card have “chip and PIN”, which is not offered in the USA.  However, most are willing to swipe or manually enter the card information.  Some very small retail locations, in mainly rural areas, and most pubs and B&Bs take cash only.
