Dublin, Ireland’s vibrant capital city, has almost 20 golf courses within the city boundaries!  And scores more within an hour’s reach.  For this 7 day tour, we’ve selected some of the top links courses in the country.

DAY1  After your arrival at Dublin Airport you’ll enjoy a scenic and informative panoramic tour of Dublin and County Wicklow on the drive to your hotel.  For the next 2 nights the Marriott Hotel at Druid’s Glen will be your luxurious home.  Set between the Irish Sea and the Wicklow Mountains, this fabulous resort is adjacent to the Druid’s Glen Golf Club and its 2 championship courses and also offers an enticing spa and health club.  You’ll enjoy dinner with your group in one of the hotel’s fine restaurants. DAY 2  Golf at Druid’s Glen Golf Club.  This parkland course, designed by Pat Ruddy and Tim Craddock, is known as “The Augusta of Europe” and hosted the Irish Open for 4 consecutive years.  Druids were the pagan high priests of Celtic Ireland and you’ll see the remains of a real druid’s altar at the 12th hole.  The gently rolling countryside may lull you into a false sense of confidence but the many water hazards will challenge you to your limits!  This evening, we’ll enjoy a “Hooley Night” at nearby Johnnie Fox’s Pub with traditional Irish food, music, song and dance.  (B,D)

DAY 3  Golf at The European Club.  Also designed by Pat Ruddy and opened in 1993, this course is recognized as one of the last great links courses built in the 20th century.  This course is also unusual in its 20 holes and features tumbling dunes as well as dramatic views of the Irish Sea from 16 holes.  The par 4, 470 yard 7th hole was named by Golf Magazine as one of the World’s Best Holes.  After your day on the links, we’ll transfer to your hotel at the 4 star Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links, originally owned by the Jameson family of whiskey fame.  This will be your home base for the rest of your Irish adventure.  Enjoy dinner on your own either in one of the hotel’s several excellent restaurants or in the eateries found in the nearby towns of Howth or Malahide.  (B)

DAY 4  Golf at the Portmarnock Links Course.  The magnificent 18 hole links course was designed by Bernard Langer and is one of Ireland’s most prestigious and challenging.  The land was owned by the Jamesons when the original course opened in 1894 and the championship links course on a peninsula jutting into the Irish Sea continues to enchant with its glorious views and challenging dunes.  Dinner at your leisure.  (B)

DAY 5  Golf at The Island Golf Club.  Although not actually on an island, until 1973 golfers had to take a boat to reach the links at the mouth of the estuary at Donabate.  The championship links course dates back to 1890 and features play mostly on sand dune ridges surrounded by wetlands, wildflowers and, of course, the Irish Sea.  Truly, an old-fashioned, high dunes, challenging experience!  Dinner at your leisure.  (B)

DAY 6  Golf at Portmarnock Old Course.  This most revered course in Dublin is ranked at #2 in Ireland, once again, according to the Volvo 2012 Top 100 Irish Golf Courses.  Dating from 1894, the 27 hole Portmarnock Old Course has hosted 13 Irish Opens in the modern era of the European Tour.  The 7,466 yard championship course won’t wow you with views or heavy dune cover.  It just pummels you with strong holes and length.  Portmarnock’s extra nine, added in the 1950s, plays just as strong, even offering 2 surprises the championship course can’t:  a scenic walk along the shore and an outstanding drivable par 4.  Dinner at your leisure.  (B)

DAY 7  Group transfer to Dublin Airport for your return trip home.  You’ll arrive in plenty of time to check-in for your flight and then enjoy some duty-free shopping.  And, of course, time to start planning your next golf trip to other exciting courses in different regions of Ireland with Emmmyjay’s Emerald Isle Adventures!
